Allegation of Research Misconduct

Ad-Dustur handles allegations of research misconduct in line with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Authors must read the author guidelines and journal policies carefully and comply with them before submitting a manuscript.

An allegation may concern a published article or a manuscript still under peer review. Complaints are handled with care and with due regard for confidentiality, through the following steps:

  1. The Editor-in-Chief receives a complaint by email stating that an article submitted to or published in this journal is suspected of research misconduct.
  2. The complainant must describe the form and details of the misconduct clearly. In a plagiarism case, for example, the allegedly copied passages must be marked and accompanied by references to the original sources and to the reported article.
  3. The Editor-in-Chief investigates with the section editor handling the article and contacts the corresponding author. The Editor-in-Chief may also involve members of the editorial board or the managing editor.
  4. The corresponding author is asked to provide a written explanation supported by facts and evidence.
  5. If the author confirms the allegation, the Editor-in-Chief takes action according to the circumstances:
    1. If the article has been published, the journal may issue an erratum or retract the article in line with the Correction and Retraction policy.
    2. If the misconduct is reported during peer review, the process may continue on condition that the author revises the manuscript according to the findings.
  6. If the author does not respond within the set deadline, or the explanation is inadequate, the manuscript may be rejected or the article permanently retracted. Before a decision is made, the journal may seek confirmation from experts, the author's institution, or other authorities where necessary.
  7. The complainant is informed of the outcome once the case is closed.
  8. The complaint case is then considered closed.
